Did an update on my iphone (which took a billion years) and when I go to check my voicemail I get a message that says “could not authorize access“. I press one and hold it down and now problem, it’s just with visual voicemail.
So I started searching for answers to why my iPhone voicemail was saying “Could Not Authorize Access”. Here’s what I found:
Option one (looked to long in my mind so I skipped to option 2):
Open Settings -> General Settings -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings.
NOTE: You will lose Wifi network passwords that were saved.
After the reset, call your own cell # and enter your voicemail password.
Then SEND a message and specify your own number to send to.
After the message is sent, you will be back at the voicmail main menu and within a moment you will hear “A new message has arrived” at which point you should end the call and power cycle the phone.
After the power cycle, open the phone app, touch the voicemail icon, and the notification and visual voicemail will work as normal if you have not already received the ‘new message waiting’ notification.
Option Two: Contact my service provider Telus to get them to see if getting them to reset one of the voicemail settings on their end would resolve the issue.
I sit here on minute 10 of hold time. …. waiting for oatmeal to cook….
Hungry….
“Hello my name is…how can I help you?” Success!
30 seconds after getting a Telus Techie my iPhone visual voicemail was back. Apparently it is quite common that the update knocks out your settings to telus (on your end or theirs I don’t know don’t care) and having them do the reset will get your iphone voicemail working again and get rid of that “Could Not Authorize Access” error message.
