Weird title I know but in one sentence I just gave you the secret to meet three of lifes emotional needs. Three of the six that every human carries and uses to motivate their actions every day.
Now that requires a little more explanation wouldn’t you say? Here we go. Let’s put a caviet on this that the fear I’m talking about is the every day fear and not the fear you feel when being chased by a lion with a fresh steak in your backpack.
First, when you feel fear and move towards it you can choose to transform that fear into a close cousin called excitement. Let’s use public speaking as an example. Before you go on stage, you get that feeling in your stomach. It’s like a herd of puppies are playing soccer in there. You get a little sweaty and your anxious.
I think it’s amazing that we can it fear and not excitement or even dare I say it, love. The emotions are so close and it’s only the slant or emotional connotation that your brain puts on it that makes fear instead of something a whole lot more productive and fun.
All right. So the emotional need of excitement or adventure is met by trotting into fear.
Now for Certainty. Certainty is actually one of the strongest emotional needs for most people. Certainty usually keeps people from doing things that involve fear but that’s messed up! It only depends on what you want to be certain about. If you want a boring life that involves no adventure or growth then you are bang on. However if you want to be certain that your life is exciting, that you live it to the fullest and that every day is a rewarding growing experience then using a fear reaction to things is a full proof way of succeeding!
Now for Growth. Everyone has to feel like something is going on their lives. You have to go to bed and think “Today was such a great day because I..” We all want to learn new things and feel like we are progressing in some way, shape or form. Now how does backing off on any new idea or opportunity because of a little fear help that along? It doesn’t. They just don’t play well together. Kind of like ice cream with a mustard topping. You’re just way better off not putting the two together.
See? Three emotional needs we all crave. Certainty, adventure and personal growth. They all involve going to places you may have not gone before. Some of you might feel fear and back off. Others, wink, wink, may feel excitement and live life with passion.
