Brenan Brothers – The Throw Down

This is a bit outside my box, so before we get started… a disclaimer. I am not an educated jazz fan. What I say is from the stand point of a guy that listens to Metallica and Fedde le Grande in the same hour. Cool? K…

I’m given the CD, I jump into my car and throw it in. I’m not even in reverse yet and I stop and stare at my cd player. First thought? These guys are not wasting ANY time getting after it AT ALL. See, at this point, I hadn’t even looked at the album title yet. So I did. “Brenan Brothers – The Throw Down”. No Kidding.

This is a throw down and it’s a shout from Alberta to everyone in Toronto that thinks if you don’t live in Toronto then you can’t be that good or even very serious about your craft. If that happens to be you, then you can step up and answer the challenge issued in the The Throwdown which also happens to be the title of the first track.

The Throw Down by the Brenan Brothers (Jim http://www.jimbrenan.com and brother Craig) also features Ralph Bowen (alto saxophone), Terell Stafford (trumpet), Geoffrey Keezer (piano),
Dana Hall (drums) and Rubim de Toledo (Bass).

Playing with these guys is the fitness equivalent of walking into a gym and telling Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Vin Diesel that you got a workout for them IF they can keep up.

Glass Sinks For A Personal Touch

I’ve been looking at houses a lot more closely since I’ve decided that I would finally like to be an owner and not just a renter. I mean closely, like in the way that I notice little things about houses that I just didn’t before.

Before I get to the main point, check out this air conditioner tutorial if you haven’t got a clue about air conditioners like I didn’t. When I was in thailand, I didn’t even know how to turn the little bastard on. (remote)

I was over a friends house the other day and saw that they had a really unique sink. It was circular first of all, not the usual oval and had a crazy vibrance to it I hadn’t seen before. It wasn’t ceramic but a glass sink! And not just any glass but a supper cool, deep blue almost metallic toned glass. It looked just like the stain glass windows you see in church. I found a company that sells the same glass sinks online out of Toledo, Ohio but for quite a bit less then most other suppliers.

For less than $100, you can get a really unique, tempered glass sink with a lifetime warranty. I think for those that like to have their personal touch reflected by their house, this sort of small tweak in house design makes you feel awesome.

At any rate, I think it would be super cool to put a sink like that in an all steel bathroom that also had a urinal. Maybe it’s a guy thing but I think that would be super cool.

Then when cleaning time came you could just go in and spray down the whole bathroom with a hose and done! On the plus side as well, you’d never have to worry about seat lifting should you have some ladies over because of the urinal…always thinking, always thinking. :-)

Actually, this brings up a story about Thailand and toilet paper I have to share. I’ll save that for another post…

What three glorious words… stream music internet. How do you stream music on the internet? I just found out about the new and revamp Napster and how they are running things now. It’s pretty cool stuff. How awesome is it that because of the internet, you don’t even need to leave your house to check out the newest and best music to hit your favorite genre?

In my never ending quest for the perfect tunage, I just found out that you can get 3 months of streaming music and 15 Mp3 downloads for ONLY $15 from Napster. Sweet Goa PsyTrance Track

No, this one is not mine.

The most information I could find on it was that it was released by “UltraBeat” and the track name is Phantasmagoria by Symbiote from the album “The innerverse”

I wish it wasn’t broken into two but I don’t know about rights on this one so I couldn’t upload the full MP3 for y’all.

What do you think?

What Are Annuity Rates?

Part of this blogs revenue comes from sponsored reviews and today in my ever continuing education of the planet we’ve agreed to call “Earth”, the topic of interest is Annuity Rates. Now, I may be revealling a little bit of my “Rose colored glasses” appoach to life but before today, I had no idea what Annuity Rates were.

Actually, I didn’t know what an “Annuity” was to start with let alone add “Rate” to that little ditty.

Why? Because I, well simply, never really cared about that stuff until I knew I could make some money by caring! I know one of my personal training clients “Paul” is going to read this and laugh at me.

At any rate, where did I go to do some research.. well of course king google. If you type in “Annuity Rates”, you’ll end up at http://www.freeannuityrates.com/

This is where I learned that an “Annuity” is

“A regular stream of level payments, whose duration may be specific or indefinite. In the United States, the word has come to be identified with multi-purpose insurance contracts terminating in a payment stream.”

I’m sure that is completely accurate but reading that just made my eye brows scrunch.

In english an another stab at defining Annuity is “In discussions of finance, usually in connection with the valuation of the stream of payments, taking into account time value of money concepts such as interest rate and future value.”

Here is where it starts to hit home a little:

“Examples of annuities are regular deposits to a savings account, monthly home mortgage payments and monthly insurance payments. Annuities are classified by payment dates. The payments (deposits) may be made weekly, monthly, quarterly, yearly, or at any other interval of time.”

Aha! So we pay money at regular intervals… got it. Anything else? Yup!

What Is An Annuity Used For?

Retirement saving is a very common motivation for the purchase of an annuity contract. The prospective retiree wants to provide income for the future, minimize the risk of losing wealth and suffering fluctuations in income. Thanks to the annuity, the holder can achieve not only tax-deferred growth of savings but the assurance of a lifelong income as well.

NOW I SEE…

So you pay in what you can and it’s dolled back out to you at regular intervals when you need it later but in the mean time it was protected from the tax monster. Cool I guess.

Which brings us to the close…

Annuity Rates

Any time you have several suppliers of a product of which Annuity Contracts are one, you’ll have competition. With this comes different rates, advantages and disadvantages given your personal situation. This is what AnnuityRates.com says:

“Fixed, variable, or indexed?  In other words, how well do you tolerate risk?  With a fixed annuity, the insurance company guarantees the rate of return at the time you purchase your annuity, and it will continue growing at that safe and secure rate for as long as you or your heirs own it.  The return is modest, but it is armor-plated against stock or bond market meltdowns.  Variable annuities raise the gamble considerably, tying your annuity’s growth to stocks or mutual funds;, in a down market you suffer long earnings droughts.  An indexed annuity splits the difference, attaching your rate of return to the Standard and Poor’s Stock Market Index or one of the other reliable barometers of investment growth.  Indexed annuities, however, come with guaranteed minimum returns.”

Oh… there’s more so if you are interested and want to learn more about the other variables, you can go here to learn about Annuity Contracts and use an Annuity Calculator of several different companies.

Good luck… My head feels like cramping…

P.S. If any of this information needs correcting, just let me know. This is my first step at understanding this sort of financial stuff.

Today’s AHA Moment

I had an “AHA moment” today. I love those because they don’t happen that often and they are vivid when they do. Kind of like chomping down on the piece of lemon wedge that comes in your water. It makes you stop and you KNOW you just did or HAD something unique happen.

I guess the person on the other side of the table gets an AHA moment as well when the lemon juice hits them in the eye…. true story.

Twitter Hummingbird Software Review For Mac

This is probably the worst money I have ever invested in anything web so far. I realize the impact that negative reviews can have on a products sales and I have to say that if reviews are meant to help, then helping you would mean telling you NOT to buy this.

I bought the mac version for $97 and am still looking for the positive in that transaction other than buying something for the sake of doing a review. Refund please.

Recharge Ipod While Traveling

I’m heading off to Thailand and need to recharge my ipod while traveling (K, I wrote this a month ago). I’m going light with just a backpack and so will not be bringing my laptop. This is a bit of a challenge because I’ve always charged my ipod either hooked up to the computer or in the dock while listening to it.
